O knize

Román Plán Z tuto otázku dovádí do krajnosti. Fiktivní děj přitom zasazuje do prostředí skutečných institucí, právních mechanismů, míst a historických souvislostí.

About the Book

Imagine living your life believing that you have it under control. You have knowingly harmed no one and have no reason to expect that anything fundamental is about to change.

Then the authorities turn against you. You find yourself in prison, suspected of an offence you did not commit. Your family, your work, your reputation and even your belief that the world follows some kind of rules are irreversibly fallen apart.

What do you do?

Plan Z takes this question to an extreme. Its fictional story unfolds against the background of real institutions, legal mechanisms, places and historical circumstances.

Nejen o parazitismu státu, institucí, advokátů, znalců, soudců, aktivistů, politiků a všech těch, kteří se naučili žít z cizí bolesti, strachu, rozpadu rodin, dluhů, závislostí a bezmoci.

Foreword

This book is not for everyone.

It was not written to offer comfort. It was not written to reassure the reader that the world is fundamentally just and that only individuals occasionally fail within it. Nor was it written to offer reconciliation where no reconciliation ever comes. It is not neutral. It is not gentle. It does not seek to soothe. It does not invite the reader to believe that everything will eventually turn out well if only we remain patient, decent and place our trust in the proper institutions.

Sometimes that is precisely how the catastrophe begins.

This novel is also about parasitism. Not only the parasitism of the state, institutions, lawyers, expert witnesses, judges, activists, politicians and all those who have learned to live off other people’s pain, fear, broken families, debts, dependencies and helplessness. It is also about a system that enables and encourages such parasitism. And it is about the fact that people very often become willing participants in their own exploitation. They sign, remain silent, pay, retreat, apologise, trust authority, obey the rules of the game, and for a long time fail to realise that those rules were not written for their protection, but for their systematic exploitation.

It is a novel about mechanisms that define us before we understand them. About decisions whose consequences we cannot foresee. About sentences that sound reasonable until they become judgments. About documents that appear neutral until they destroy someone’s life. About people who believe they are doing the right thing simply because they are standing on the right side of the desk.

The realism of this story does not lie in the probability of every individual event. It lies in the accuracy with which the systems governing people’s lives are described. In the accuracy with which it portrays how a decent, working, law-abiding person can become trapped in machinery that first deprives him of his voice, then his dignity, then his property, then his children, and finally even the possibility of being understood.

The novel contains the real names of judges, expert witnesses, lawyers and politicians, together with some of their authentic and documented statements. In this respect, it also draws on the author’s own life. It also contains fiction, exaggeration, compression and events that did not occur in the way they are described here. This is not a case file, a lawsuit or an academic study. It is a story that is partly true and partly entirely invented.

The novel also explores strategies by which a person may attempt to preserve autonomy, property and room for action when confronted by an apparatus more powerful than himself.

Sometimes a novel can reveal the truth more precisely than even the best document.
